taking flight

“All men dream, but not equally. those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.” -T.E. Lawrence

I am always amazed when dreams become a reality.  The feeling is sort of like the one you get right when your plane takes off.  You are a bit nervous, equally excited to arrive to your destination, and when you hit that one spot when your stomach takes a little dip, you have that sudden thought  of “what am I doing?”  You suddenly realize you are now suspended in air.  Sure, at that point you aren’t too far off the ground, but even then there is no turning back.  The pursuit of dreams is often like taking flight.

In our case it was very much that way.  When Kevin and I decided to pursue photography full time, it has not been without it’s own set of doubts and thoughts of turning back.  I think back to the day when we chose to sacrifice the comfortable life that we had grown to love, in pursuit of the unconventional, the uncomfortable, the dream.  I think back to the time when I could have gone back to work full time doing the very thing I was so good at doing.  It never really made me happy, it just made someone else a lot of money.  Instead we pursue.  We pursue a life we have always dreamed of.  One where images tell stories.  One where colors reveal emotions.  One where travel is a necessity and sacrifice is a constant.  A life where voices of the unheard are amplified.  One where dreams are our biggest fears and greatest allies.  A life where we strive to make the impossible a reality, not just for ourselves, but for those we come in contact with.  A life where taking flight and soaring high is inevitable.

I don’t sleep much lately and it’s not because Kevin snores and the aluminum of our Airstream ticks as it cools down in the night air.  That being said, I have never felt so focused and rested.

Cheers to the dreamers.  Cheers to all those who’s best dreams are lived while wide awake.  Cheers to all the ‘dangerous men’ who dare to take flight.
